Coupon Queens and How We Do It!

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Verleen Wonderly We’ve all seen the Coupon Queens on various television shows and been amazed at how little they paid for a ton of grocery items. Sometimes you may even wonder how on earth she can care for her family when it seems she bought thirty packages of pasta and nothing to go with it. The truth is, she didn’t need the pasta sauce, she picked up thirty jars of that last week, when it was on sale, and she was getting it for free or pennies with her coupons. The trick to saving the most money on groceries is to be a stockpiler. To do this, you need to gather as many coupons as you can for items you know you will use, match them up with a store sale, and then buy as many as possible while you are getting the items cheap or free. Using this tip, you can make sure you have enough of the needed items without having to pay full price. Coupons and sales tend to cycle and once you try it for awhile, you will learn the cycles for your area and know when it is time to stock up. By doing this you will have enough supplies on hand, so you can wait to pick up more when the item is on sale again, and you have a coupon to go with the sale. And there we come to another issue that some people don’t understand, you can use a coupon in conjuction with a store sale. They are two totally different promotions, so you aren’t doing anything fraudulent. You simply cannot combine more than one manufacturers coupon on a single item, but if you put ten items on the conveyor belt and have ten coupons, then that is fine as long as your store permits it. Some stores do set limits on how many like coupons they will accept on one order so always check before doing your shopping. You can also combine a store specific coupon with a manufacturers coupon to realize even more savings. If you have a store in your area that doubles coupons you can really save some money. Some stores double up to 50cents and some to 99cents, thus giving you $1 or $1.98 off. This is another store policy you will have to inquire about before shopping, as it varies from retailer to retailer. One of the most important tips that I tell everyone who asks me about my couponing and how I save so much money is to FORGET BRAND LOYALTY! I know there are occasional exceptions where some products suffer in quality between brands but this is not the rule. One brand of tissues will wipe your nose as well as another, and if you can get one for less than $1, and the other is over $2 a box, then by purchasing the one you’re getting cheapest, you’re putting that money back into your wallet for something else. If you are like me, disabled with no disposable income, then every little bit you save can mean another meal that comes home for your family. The best place to find coupons is in your local Sunday newspaper. Generally, there are two inserts each week, except for holidays, and some weeks there are manufacturer specific coupon inserts. If you find your local paper doesn’t have them, then try looking around to find an out of town paper for the coupon inserts. Each week, I buy at least one early paper, which is available in my town Saturday evening. I browse through the coupons, and if there are good coupons, and I know I will save more than what I am paying for the paper, I will go out the next day and buy another stack. You are not limited to only one paper and one copy of each coupon. Another great place to find inserts is your local newspaper recycling center. Many people do not use coupons, millions of dollars worth are thrown away each year, so with a little digging you can find a real treasure trove. By searching online or visiting message boards, you can also find links to printables, or people who are willing to trade the ones they can’t use for other coupons, or for a small postage and handling fee. When you first get into couponing, you will spend the same, or maybe even a little more than you did before on groceries, but once you build a little stockpile you will suddenly see the savings add up. It makes a big difference when you run out of shampoo and can just run to the closet and grab another bottle that you got for free, instead of running to the store and spending almost $3 for a replacement bottle. Yes, it does take some time and effort, you have to organize your coupons, be willing to store hop, and spend a few minutes to review the sales flyer, and match it with your coupons, but you can quickly turn couponing into a great hobby as well as money saver. Postcards: Awareness Tool or Selling Tool?

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

By Martha Retallick Are postcards better for building awareness or for selling? In my opinion, the answer to the above question is, “They can do both jobs. It depends on what type of business you’re in.” My own perspective is that of the Web and graphic designer who must distinguish herself from the hordes of other designers out there. I do this by keeping my name in front of my clients and prospects with postcards. Over the years, this approach has brought me quite a bit of repeat business from my longtime clientele, and new business from the prospects on my list. Since many businesses do nothing to stay in touch with their market, and spend their precious time and resources chasing after new customers, I think that the awareness approach has merit. After all, it costs six times less to sell to an existing customer than it does to sell to a new customer. This has been proven through numerous studies. Now, let’s move on to the selling approach. Let’s say you’re new in town, and, by golly, you need some clients pronto-pronto. Which means that you’re not going to send out postcards to build awareness. Rather, you’re going to send something that gets new clients ringing your phone and setting up appointments where you sell your design services. In short, different strokes for different folks. And postcards are versatile enough to serve ‘em all. Martha Retallick, “The Passionate Postcarder,” hails from Tucson, Arizona, USA. Mazeltov, It;’s Easter

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Maureen Sinclair When my Dad, the only son in a Jewish Orthodox family, met my mother, the youngest daughter in a large Irish Catholic family the earth must have shook because those two crazy kids ran off and married much to the surprise and consternation of both their families. Although the families never quite reconciled this event, a peace of sorts was worked out. A dtente, if you will. In due time, I was born and my two brothers and sister eventually made the scene to complete our family. In many ways children of religiously blended families live schizophrenic lives and this is probably most apparent during periods of religious holidays when the obligatory pilgrimages are made to grandparents houses for the customary observances and celebrations. My siblings and I always knew that we were loved by all our grandparents, aunts and uncles. I had thirty-two first cousins on my moms side of the family and six first cousins on my dads side and those cousins, closest in age to me, were my best friends and remain so to this day. But, we also knew we were different than our cousins because we celebrated strange holidays that these cousins just didnt understand. My Christian cousins celebrated Christmas, my Jewish cousins celebrated Chanukah and WE celebrated both. In our house a Christmas tree was also called a Chanukah bush. On the Friday before Easter we ate our Passover dinner at Bubbas house complete with all the solemnity the occasion demands in Jewish homes. We heard the Passover story, how our ancestors were delivered out of bondage in Egypt. We ate the bitter herbs and reflected on their slavery to the Pharaoh and their deliverance to the land of milk and honey in Israel. As I grew older, privately I would think of Jesus, attending the Seder and reflect that He would have been at home during Passover in my Bubbas house. On Easter we went to Mass and heard the Easter story and reflected on the cruel death of Jesus at the hands of the Romans; how He died for the sins of man and of His resurrection on Easter morning and His and mans triumph over death by His sacrifice. Later we went to Nanas house and ate ham. We were raised to honor and respect both our cultures and because of that we grew up to be tolerant of the beliefs of others. Our own religious beliefs are personal and none of us are doctrinaire Christians or Jews but my sister and my brothers are good people and I believe that I am too. Being raised in a religiously blended family had many moments of confusion and hilarity and there were times of some embarrassment to our parents. I remember one dinner at Bubbas house, which was kept strictly Kosher, when I asked/demanded butter with my meal and I threw quite a commotion when I was firmly denied this request. I can still remember the look I got from both my parents and if looks could kill I would have died on the spot. There was also the time, after Mass one Sunday when I wished the parish priest Mazeltov while he stood at the door of the church talking to his parishioners while they were leaving the church. On this occasion my mother turned beet red and again, if looks could kill, I wouldnt be here to tell the story. The fall out from my mom and dads love and devotion to each other, their children and their families continues to this day and is seen in many ways. In my own family for example, I continue to honor and celebrate the holidays and customs in which my parents were raised (although I do not keep Kosher). As the holidays approach this year, I am planning my Passover Seder and shortly thereafter, I will host an Easter dinner at my home. All are invited regardless of beliefs, I only ask that we all enjoy the holidays and the food and the conversation. My Passover Seder will be as traditional as I can make it and I will be using recipes that I inherited from my Bubba. One of those recipes which will be on my table is one I particularly like because I was told that its texture and appearance was to remind the diners of the bricks and mortar that the Jews in slavery to Pharaoh were forced to work with to build the Pyramids: Haroset 1 lbs. Tart apples , peeled and cored4 ozs. Walnut halves (about a cup to a cup and a forth) TBS. Cinnamon3 to 5 TBS. Sweet wine Finely chop the apples and walnuts. Add the cinnamon and mix together in a bowl. Add enough wine to moisten the mixture to create a paste-like texture. Taste and add more cinnamon if necessary. This recipes makes about 4 cups. Another Passover Recipe that I first tasted at my Bubbas table was a Honey Cake made with matzo cake meal so that it was suitable for the Passover Seder. Honey Sponge Cake 1/3 cup Matzo cake meal1/3 cup Potato starch cup Sugar1 tsp. Cinnamon1 tsp. Ground GingerPinch of Finely Grated Nutmeg8 Eggs (separated) 1 Egg White cup Vegetable Oil1 cup Honey Preheat the Oven to 325 degrees and lightly oil a 10 inch tube pan. Combine the matzo cake meal, potato starch, sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Make a well in the center and one by one, add the egg yolks, beating well after each addition. Beat in the oil and the honey. With an electric mixer, beat the 9 egg whites until they are stiff but not dry. Gently fold the beaten whites into the batter. Turn the mixture into the prepared pan and bake for about 1 hour, until the top of the cake is a rich brown and a skewer inserted in the center tests clean. Let the cake cool on a rack. Put powered sugar on top. This will make 8 to 10 servings. Baking with matzo meal, even the most finely ground meal, is a bit of a challenge. The large quantity of eggs used in the batter is what gives this cake its lightness. At my Easter dinner, I will be remembering my mom as I bake my ham and use recipes that she inherited from her mom, my nana. Baked Ham When buying a ham to bake, allow pound per serving and allow 20 minutes of cooking time in a 350 degree over per pound (using a meat thermometer allow for an internal temperature to reach 160 degrees). Preheat oven to 350 degrees and place your ham on a rack in a shallow roasting pan with the fat side up. Bake the ham unglazed until the thermometer reads 130 degrees or until 1 hour before the ham is done. Prepare to glaze the ham by scoring the outside fat in a diamond pattern, cutting inch deep with a sharp knife. Glaze: 1 cup Bown sugar 1 cup Honey 2 tsp. Dry mustard 15 (or more) whole cloves 1 can Pineapple rings Maraschino Cherries (optional) Basting Sauce: 1 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon dry mustard, 1 cup orange juice. Combine the ingredients to make the glaze, mix well and spread over the outside of the ham. Stud with the whole cloves decoratively at the each of the diamond points. Put the pineapple slices in the center of each diamond and secure with toothpicks and finally, if you wish, put a maraschino cherry into the center of each of the pineapple slices and secure those with toothpicks (dont forget to take the toothpicks out before you serve the ham). Return the ham to the oven to finish baking and if you wish, baste the ham every 15 minutes with the Basting Sauce. Let the ham rest and carve at the dinner table. And for desert: Carrot Cake 2 cups All Purpose Flour2 cups Sugar tsp. Baking Soda1 tsp. Baking Powder tsp. Salt1 tsp. Cinnamon tsp. Nutmeg3 egg yolks2 tsp. Hot Water1 cups Grated carrots1 cup Vegetable oil3 egg whites, stiffly beaten1 cup Walnuts (finely chopped) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix dry ingredients; add oil, carrots, egg yolks, and water. Mix. Add beaten egg whites and fold in gently. Add nuts. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 50 minutes in an 8 inch round or square pan. Cool cake on cake rack. Frost with Cream Cheese Icing (when cake is cool). Cream Cheese Icing stick Butter (softened)1 (8 oz.) Cream cheese, (softened)16 ozs. Powdered Sugar2 tsp. Vanilla cup Chopped Walnuts (chopped coarsely) Mix cream cheese and butter together. Add sugar and vanilla. Mix well, Add nuts and front the cooled cake. My mom and dad married because they found each other and fell deeply, completely and eternally in love. They stayed in love and over came obstacles that even I can only imagine and they did it with grace and humor. I am so grateful to them for sharing that love with me and my siblings and as we approach the coming holidays, I will remember them with love and will honor the heritage they gave me. And so I say to you, Malzeltov, its Passover/Easter. Maureen R. Sinclair is an American (via N.Y.C. and Lexington, KY). who currently resides in Nova Scotia, Canada. Are You Casting or Keeping?

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

By Mark E. Baker 1Pe.5:5-7: Likewise you that are younger be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that in due time he may exalt you. Cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares about you. If we could only get a revelation of the Love that God has for us, and truly understand in our innermost being how much He cares for us, Then I believe it will become easy to wholly and completely trust Him. It is hard to trust someone you dont know very well. One of the best ways to get to know Him is through His Word. His Word is His revelation of Himself. Lets look at what Peter is saying in our opening text. A. Cloth yourself in all humility, this means humbleness of mind. We might say it in another way. Do not be sufficient in our own right, but let our sufficiency be in God, through Jesus Christ. Then it goes on to expound on this by adding, God opposes the proud. I dont want God opposing me, do you? B. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that in due time he may exalt you. True humility will esteem the Word of God over our own problems! We will not put our problems first, but will put Gods Word first place in every situation. Dont meditate on the problem, but meditate on the problem solver. He delights in taking care of His Children. He loves to give Good gifts to His children. Matthew 7:11: If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! C. Cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares about you. Our anxieties or cares press down on us sometimes, We must cast them on the Lord, for he cares for us. When I read this verse I am reminded of a documentary I saw where it showed local fishermen casting their fishing nets, they would gather their nets up and sling the nets as far as they could. This would take some considerable effort on their part, but the rewards would be a harvest of fish. The reward was well worth the effort. In a like manner, we can do this with the anxieties or cares of this world, whether it is a family problem, a work problem, or a financial problem, what ever the problem, if God tells us to cast our cares on Him, then we can! He wouldnt be a just God if He told us to do something and didnt give us the ability to follow through with it, God is just! He has our best interests at the center of His heart, when we cast our care on Him, then He can manifest His love toward us. The rewards wont be a net full of fish, but peace of mind and spirit, and our needs supplied as well. Glory to God!!!!! However this requires some effort on our part, we have to do the casting. God doesnt do this for us. He is telling us to do it, and we can. Ph.4;19: But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Say it out loud, I cast my cares on you Father. I love you, and I know you love me, and will supply my every need. I give you thanks, and praise Your holy Name. We must take time to Praise Him, God inhabits the praises of His people.Speaking out loud will release your faith, and give God glory! Praise Him with thanksgiving, and quit grumbling and complaining like the children of Israel did in the desert. Joshua and Caleb were the only ones to make it out of the desert and into the promised land. They were the only ones who put their trust in God. We should let this be a lesson to us. The rewards are great for those who put their trust in the Lord.God is faithful, but we have a part to play, and must be diligent in it. Pr.3:3-6: Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. We have to put mercy and truth around our neck and write them on our heart. His Word says this will cause us to find favor and understanding. We need to totally and completely trust in Him, This is sometimes easier to tell people to do than to actually do. When you meditate in, and confess his Word, it starts taking root in your spirit. Then the Bible says, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. What we put into our heart will come out, and thats when the will of God can be manifested in our lives and the lives of others as well. We must acknowledge Him in all our ways, and then He shall direct our path. Acknowledgement is to recognize as a fact, admit that something is true. It also means to regard or to have respect, to understand. Vs.5 says to lean not to our own understanding. He will give us insight and His understanding when we acknowledge Him. Glory to God! We should acknowledge Him as our savior, our redeemer, our healer, our God who is always with us. He said He will never leave us or forsake us, we can and should take great comfort in that. Hes the all sufficient one, the God who is more than enough, Hes the supplier to our every need! Praise His Name and acknowledge Him as the supplier to your every need, And dont back down from it, give Him the praise and watch Him work strong on your behalf. Put Him to the test, prove that His Word is true. If you want to know for sure that you are a child of God then pray this prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus. Your word says, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. (Jn.6:37), So I know You wont cast me out, but You take me in, And I thank you for it. You said in your Word, “whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Ro. 10:13).I am calling on Your name, So I know You have saved me now, You also said, that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to salvation. (Ro.10:9,10).I believe in my heart that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I believe He was raised from the dead for my justification. And I confess Him now as my Lord, Because Your Word says, with the heart one believes to righteousness and I do believe with my heart, I have now become the righteousness of God in Christ. (2 Cor. 5:21),And I am saved! Thank You, Lord!I can now truthfully say, I see myself as a born again child of God! Glory to God!!!! Amen. I was raised Catholic, and was born again at the age of 17. I received God’s call into ministry at the age of 19 and began to prepare for ministry. I graduated from Rhema Bible Training Center in 1979. The Lord has called me to teach. My desire is to help all that are seeking to come into a deeper understanding of what God has done for us through Christ Jesus and I have started a web site for this purpose called The Olive Branch; Please visit us for more free studies and resources to help you on your journey.Mark Bakerhttp://www.olivebranchministries.us Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Mark_E._Baker http://EzineArticles.com/?Are-You-Casting-or-Keeping?–&id=308256 free all health from insurance himself quotes how california that domestic had health them insurance his partner1243 only supplemental being health into insurance under blue through cross how blue at shield said of on minnesota had simply me blue both plan for

Your Ideal Customers: Do You Know Who They Are?

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Andrea J. Stenberg A few weeks ago my seven-year old son and his friend participated in a common summer-time rite of passage: the lemonade stand. They decorated their stand, made signs and posted them throughout the neighbourhood, drew chalk arrows on the sidewalk and got started. At the end of the day they had made $14, a pretty good total for a neighbourhood with little foot traffic. The boys decided they were so successful they wanted to repeat the event. I informed them that this time they would have to pay for the lemonade themselves. They began worrying that the cost would eat into their profits too much. I casually suggested Kool-Aid would be cheaper. Their reply was not so casual. If we use Kool-Aid, we wont get the grown-ups, my son insisted. Theyre where the money is. At first I laughed, but after thinking about his response, I became very impressed. This seven-year old kid knew instinctively who his ideal customer was: adults who buy a drink and tell him to keep the change. He also knew that if he sold Kool-Aid, the adults would be less likely to buy. It wasnt that he didnt want to sell to the kids on the street, he just knew hed make more money selling to the adults. That got me thinking. How many grown-ups with full time businesses are as focused on their ideal client? Do you have a good picture of your ideal client or is that picture a little fuzzy around the edges? Do you know who they are and what they buy? When you add a new product or service, do you think about how your ideal client will react to this new offering? Even though there were more kids on the street and they would be willing to buy lemonade or Kool-Aid, my son knew he needed to get the adults in order to make more money. So if you havent done so in a while, go over your customer list. Figure out who the most profitable customers are. Find out what motivates them to buy from you. If youre not sure, ask. Make a list and write it down. Once you know who your lemonade customers are and what motivates them, you can start using this information to create marketing materials that specifically target them. Its not that you necessarily want to get rid of your Kool-Aid customers, you just want to start attracting more lemonade customers. Andrea J. Stenberg is a freelance commercial writer.
