By Rachel Paxton Surprise a friend (or your mom) with an easy-to-make cookie bouquet. Use your imagination to create a gift that special someone will really enjoy. All you need to get started is a basic sugar cookie recipe like this one from our recipe database: Best Sugar Cookies 2 cups sugar 2 cups margarine or butter 3 eggs 1 tsp. lemon extract 1 tsp. salt 3 tsp. baking powder 6 cups flour Cream together first 4 ingredients. Mix remaining dry ingredients together and mix in with the creamed mixture. Add enough flour to handle dough. Roll cookies out on floured board and cut with your favorite cookie cutters. Bake 350 or 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes until lightly browned on the outside edges. For a flower bouquet, use flower-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies. Roll cookie dough 1/2 inch thick to accommodate popsicle or lollipop sticks. Gently insert stick into cookies before baking. You may need to bake an extra minute or two because of the thicker dough. Watch closely while baking. After cookies cool, frost with your favorite frosting and/or outline cookies with decorator icing. Wrap cookies in saran wrap or small cellophane gift bags. Admiring Trees

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Jonathon Hardcastle Near at hand, we all can see beautiful trees. Every time I walk the city parks, or visit the country side, I gaze the trees that I cross bringing back memories of happy tree climbing, tent camping in the woods, long walks with my folks, hiking with friends or just relaxing underneath a tree’s branches enjoying the breeze. Although my yard was never big enough, I managed to as a kid to convince my parents to plant trees inside its perimeter and whenever I touch their trunk I get excited knowing that they would not have been there if I did not insist to plant them. Trees are large, perennial, woody plants, which continue growing until they die. They grow just about everywhere on Earth, from extreme cold regions near the Arctic and the Antarctic to hot tropical regions around the equator and even in deserts and the most diverse populations of trees are found in the tropical rain forests. In comparison to other plant forms, trees are considered long-lived. As perennial plants, they are classified as having a distinct, self-supporting main stem, or trunk, containing a woody tissue that produces secondary limbs and branches. Their height and single main stem differentiate them from shrubs, which are usually shorter and have many stems. With more than 20,000 types of trees growing around the world, a few species can grow really tall, like redwoods and eucalyptus that reach heights of more than 110 m. (360 ft.). Trees live anywhere from a few, to thousands of years, like the olive tree or a bristlecone pine growing in California’s White Mountains that has been dated as at least 4700 years old. Trees do come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and can be divided into six basic groups according to the features they have in common. These are: broadleaf trees, needleleaf trees, palm and pandanus and lily trees, cycad trees, tree ferns, and ginkgo trees. All of the above groups have provided us with food, fibers, medicines, and many other substances valuable in every day life. If you are asked what product you can receive from trees, wood is the one that quickest comes to mind. Since ancient times, people have used wood to make tools and construct buildings as well as for forms of art and expression. Most importantly, wood has also been used as a source of fuel. Furthermore, trees in the world’s forests or plantations provide food and shelter for humans and wildlife. Trees provide us with fruits, nuts, roots and other tree parts which we use to feed ourselves. Tropical fruit trees are among the most popular and include avocados, grapefruits, mangoes, and oranges. Cooler, temperate regions have fewer kinds of fruit trees, but produce vast amounts of apples, cherries, and peaches. Almonds, pecans, walnuts, and macadamia nuts are a few easily recognized species of nut producing trees. The most important nut tree of warm regions is the coconut palm, which produces coconuts. Trees also supply chocolate, coffee, maple syrup, and such spices as cinnamon. Finally, trees also have a role in conservation. Along lakes and rivers tree roots conserve soil, holding top soil in place, and water, holding water in the ground. Where they grow in open country, they act as windbreaks and keep the wind from blowing away topsoil, therefore aiding in stopping desertification. Wood Turning - Sanding Can Be Made to Go Better

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Darrell Feltmate One of the maxims of wood turning is simply that a good finish makes for a good product. Another is that a good finish requires a good surface. The way for most of us to get that surface is through sanding. Occasionally a good surface is gotten from the tool but that is rare. Unfortunately another facet of turning work is that most if not all wood turners prefer not to sand. I have know only one who did. Therefor it is good to have an established protocol for sanding. Turn the best surface you can from the tools themselves. Why give yourself extra work by sanding sloppy tool work? For face plate work learn to use shear scrapers and use them well. In most circumstances a shear scrape will give you the best surface. If you turn much spindle work, learn to use a skew. It does seem to scare off some people but the finish is unparalleled for all other spindle tools. If you must leave a blemish on the surface, make sure it is a ridge and not a groove. Ridges sand out much faster than grooves. A ridge is a bit of raised wood easily brought down to the surface level. Grooves require all the wood around them to be lowered to the bottom of the groove and that is a lot of material.Start with the finest grit you can reasonably use. There is no sense spending thirty minutes with 180 when two minutes each with 100, 120 and 180 would do the same job. On the other hand, your cutting may have left a surface the equivalent of 120 grit paper and it would be foolish to reduce it to 80.Treat the sandpaper as if it was free. Paper that is filled with wood dust and hardened sap will not cut. It can be cleaned but is seldom worth the time and effort. Dull paper does not cut properly and dull 180 will not cut like 240 no matter what you do. If the paper seems dull or dirty switch to a new surface or a new piece altogether. Use a good brand of paper. Cheap paper will have sanding material with uneven grits and poor patterning. It will cut poorly and leave more work to do. Sometimes grits may vary a bit in their grading from company to company but this is usually not a problem. Quality is far more an issue.Sand with the lathe on when you can but do the last sanding of each grit is the direction of the grain. It may require turning off the lathe to do so.For power sanding face plate work many of us have gone to drill powered sanding disks with hook and loop sanding pads. Be careful not to sand at too high a speed, especially with such a set up. The high speeds can cause heat that will in turn case hardening of the surface of the wood, or small checks to appear. In either scenario the surface will suffer.Keep the edges of wood turned features sharp. Sometimes you will have to fold the sandpaper to give a sharp edge to sand up to the feature. If there is excessive tear out especially in the coarser grits, put a piece of paste wax on the offending area. It will stiffen the fibers and allow better sanding without ruining the final finish. When you are done, stop. There is no need to put too high a finished surface on a piece that does not require it.Carefully cut pieces of wood may not need any sanding, especially if a skew is used on fine spindle work. Some tools and the like are better with a surface that is not too slick. Some woods are so open pored that further sanding will not improve the surface. Some studies have shown that sanding past 400 for certain varnishes and other surface building finishes is a waste of time.Collect as much dust at the source and use a good dust mask. Some woods are toxic and others are known to be allergens for a lot of people. All dust will prove to be a health risk to your lungs. Do not forget to admire the surface gotten and realized the work was worth it. Teen Depression - It’s One Of The Biggest Problems In Our Nation Today And It Shouldn’t Be Ignored

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Neil Day We all know the teenage years are fraught with emotional ups and downs. Whats a tragedy today is a memory tomorrow. With this in mind, its very hard for parents and other loved ones to recognize the signs of teen depression. The fact is this condition is real and it can have some dire consequences for a young sufferer. The signs and symptoms of teen depression are very similar to adult depression. The unfortunate truth, however, is that parents and the teens themselves might have a difficult time recognizing them since the teen years are so filled with emotional peaks and pitfalls. Its important for any parent to know and understand the signs of teen depression. The rise of teen suicide alone is reason enough that parents should be familiar of the tip offs that more help than a pat on the back is necessary. Just like in adult depression, the signs of teen depression include such things as a depressed mood, withdrawal from activities and friends, a change in eating habits, thoughts of suicide, trouble sleeping, loss of ability to feel pleasure and so on. These symptoms can appear in a multitude of combinations, but the key is that they will show up and last for more than two weeks at a time. Teen depression can be very difficult for even the most attentive of parents to recognize. But, it should be watched out for, especially after traumatic incidents and even seemingly minor ones. Teenagers do have their ups and downs, but when the downs come and they last, help is likely needed. Teen depression is treated in much the same manner as adult depression. It generally includes a combination of psychotherapy and perhaps even medication. The idea will be to help the teen identify the root cause, alleviate the symptoms and help give him or her the tools necessary to cope. Adults might remember the teenage years idyllically, but the truth is they can be very difficult and they tend to be filled with pressures adults have forgotten about. From learning how to date to getting the right grades for college, the levels of pressure teens are under can be incredible. Without having the coping skills adults (in some cases) have developed some youth fall prey to teen depression. This is a condition, however, they don’t have to suffer through alone. By knowing the signs and realizing when they can help, youngsters with teen depression can get the help they need. If your teenage son or daughter suddenly told you they felt life wasn’t worth living, do you think they could be suffering from teen depression? If not you must visit this site called Some Depression Info RIGHT NOW! Don’t under estimate the serious of depression. Find out more about depression treatment and depression medication … It could literally mean the difference between life and death. Marriage: The Second Time Around

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Beverly Mahone Is marriage really better the second time around? As one who falls into that category, I say absolutely! I’m very excited and feel blessed to have been given another opportunity to love again. But in hindsight, my first marriage wasn’t built on a foundation of love. It was “lust” right from the start. Unfortunately, when the passion started fading away, we realized there was nothing else we had in common. Many young people tend to confuse lust for love and fall into the trap of letting their emotions take control of their logical, rational thinking mind. Isn’t it interesting how differently we think when we’re young as opposed to when we grow older and wiser? When I look back over my younger days, I realize I spent way too much time craving the WRONG man for all of the RIGHT reasons. I wanted to feel love, to be loved, and to give love in return but the sex clouded my judgement in making sure I was choosing the right mate. Can you relate? How many times did you ignore someone’s red flag warnings because you were head over heels in love with the “idea” of being in love? How often did you justify or simply overlook his or her faults and irresponsible behavior because you were so sure they would change? Then what happens to your happily ever after? Mine ended abruptly in divorce court and I spent many days and nights trying to understand why I let myself get into such a mess. But thank God for maturity and wisdom! Once I wiped the tears away for good and took off the blinders, I began to see what it really meant to be involved in a meaningful relationship. One of the beautiful things about growing older is it gives us the benefit of wisdom. That, in turn, allows us to make smarter choices. As for me, I’m smart enough not to believe in love at first sight anymore. One reason being, I don’t see quite as well as I used to. I’m also smart enough to be more discriminating in my taste. I’ve learned how to weed out the imitation from the real thing. So now I’m happy to say God has blessed me with a new love. He’s a man who’s strong enough to deal with my strengths, yet gentle enough to understand and cope with my emotional stress and strife. I’m totally enjoying my second marriage and yes, it makes lusting after him even better! Beverly Mahone is a veteran journalist and an accomplished motivational speaker. By David G. Getting dates with women online is something that a lot of men struggle with for a variety of reasons such as not feeling they are attractive enough, not being confident, not knowing what to say, or whatever reason they might have, the fact is that it can actually be very easy to get dates with attractive women online, if you know what you are doing then you can do it. Here are three tips for you on how to do it: 1) Have a picture in your profile - This can make such a big difference it’s unbelievable, people want to see you before they make contact, they want to have a face to relate with the person they are talking with and if a women visit’s your profile, likes what you have to say and feels as though you would be nice to talk with, you can be pretty sure that in nearly every single case, if there is a picture of you then they will be more likely to make contact and start communicating with you. 2) Describe yourself well - People are afraid of the unknown, people like to feel safe and sure of what they are doing rather than taking risks, if you put effort into your description and really get your personality into it then you will make a much better connection with the person reading your profile, the more the person knows about you (without giving away too much), the more they feel as though they actually do know you. 3) Ask them to contact you - So many people just throw up a profile and hope that people will read it and contact them, well, this can actually work some times, people will contact you if they really want to enough, however, by simply asking readers to do it you can increase the response you get a lot, all you need to do is state something like this in your profile - “If you enjoyed reading my profile and would like to have a chat, please send me a message and I’ll get back to you”, it can make a big difference. The Different Types of Loans

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Andy_M]Andy M Today, loan has become the part of the normal living. In the present circumstances, it is difficult to identify a person without even taken a singe loan. Loans are the money provided for temporary purposes, which has to be repaid in the particular repayment track. Now, most of the people have multiple loans since the economic conditions are becoming stringent. The widespread utility of the loans have motivated to introduce many different types of loan. The different types of loan have its own characteristics and attributes, which makes it different from others. The economic regulations prevailing in the country is the deciding factor behind the different types of loan. The different types of loan are available mainly in the focus of the purpose of the loan. The most popular types of loan include home loan, personal loan, car loan, student loan, payday loan, debt consolidation loan and so on. The lenders have also introduced many subtypes of these loans, to meet the necessity of the specific group of people. The point essentially has to be noted is that these loans have different rates and repayment track. Each type of loan will be structured according to the needs of the particular loan. In case of a particular loan type such as home loan, the repayment track will be longer and the interest rates will be comparatively cheaper. The different types of loan can be primarily categorized into two major classes, secured and unsecured. The secured loans are the particular group of loans, which is raised from the lenders by providing a collateral security of any of your valuable assets. Secured loans seem to be the most flexible loans as they are offered in lower interest rates and longer repayment tracks. The secured loans are provided in lenient terms as the lender does not have any risk in the loan amount as they can go for the foreclosure of the asset, if the borrower makes any lapse in the loan repayment. The home mortgage, equity loan, and car loan are some other types of secured loans. Unsecured loans, on the other hand, are provided without any collateral security. The lenders have the risk of their money and most often the rates and other attributes of loan are very narrow. The borrowers cannot enjoy many privileges in the unsecured loans, but it does not relieve you from the risk of losing any of your valuable assets, if you make any defaults. The loan refinancing is a unique loan type, in which a particular collateral property is used for a second loan in an increase loan amount or better conditions and rates. The loan refinancing is opted as a beneficial plan in many options as the collateral gains more appraisal value. Even though the requirements for each loan will be different, some conditions can be generalized as a common requirement for any type of loan. Good credit score is the basic requirement for any loan. However, now many specialized lenders are present in the market that can provide loan to bad credit people. Due to the competition in the market, most of the lenders are ready to provide many adjustments in the loan rates. Online loan lenders have made the loan processing easy. The intensive market search will help you to obtain an appropriate and affordable loan. Making Your Own Country Wood Crafts

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Jared Winston Country wood crafts have found a place in recent years in many homes that have very little otherwise in the way of country decor. Many different types of crafts have shown up in droves, from the simple things such as plaques and wicker baskets, to much more complex carvings and such. There is a beauty to country wood crafts which goes beyond their obvious qualities. Something in the way they are constructed makes a welcome plaque feel truly welcoming, or a handmade carving of a bear more than just shaped wood, but truly as majestic and powerful as the creature it depicts. While it is impossible to truly explain why this is the case, there can be no doubt that it is true. If you want to bring a sense of welcome to your own home, there is nothing that does so quite as well as a welcoming plaque. It can carry nearly any message or image you desire, and is probably the simplest of all country wood crafts. However, despite being so simple, it can have a great deal of impact on your home, particularly if you choose a message that has a special meaning to you and your family. Like all country wood crafts, the first thing you will need for your project is wood. The wood you use does not really matter all that much, apart from the size of the piece. It can be in any shape you want, although leaving it in the natural shape it is cut in will give your end result a little bit of an extra rustic feel. You can get this kind of wood from many craft supply stores, in a number of different varieties. Or, if you are so inclined, you could simply cut a piece of wood from a tree or a fairly thick branch to use for your project. Be sure the piece you cut is large enough to hold the message you intend to use. Once you have your piece cut out, sand the front surface smooth (this is particularly important, because your painting will look rather odd if the surface is not fairly smooth.) You may choose to remove the ring of bark around the outside of your piece, or leave it in place, whichever seems more appealing to you. Also, be sure the thickness of your piece is uniform, as any slant will cause it to hang poorly when put up on a wall. The last stage of your adventure in country wood crafts is to add your message. For this, you can simply paint on your words, pictures, or whatever else you like by freehand if you are particularly artistically inclined. If you are not, however, there is no need to fear. Simply type out whatever words you want to use on a computer (an odd tool for country wood crafts, but useful nonetheless,) in a nice font, print it out and use a pencil to cover the back of the paper, and place it on the wood. By tracing around the letters, you will leave a pencil line on the wood below, which you can then fill in with paint. Copyright Jared Winston, 2006. All Rights Reserved. Top 10 Viral Marketing Mistakes

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Dan Swanson 1. Failing to understand how to make a marketing piece viral Often people create what they call a viral marketing piece when it is nothing more than a brochure and an advertisement. It is way too self serving. It has no possibility of creating buzz. While there is no guaranteed formula for creating a viral marketing piece, there are many things you can do to increase its effectiveness and its viral nature. 2. Failing to make it interesting enough to pass along Whether or not there are external incentives to encourage the viral spread, if you failed to make the article or e-book interesting enough with high quality content that is useful or entertaining, you couldnt pay them enough to pass it along. If on the other hand it is very useful, high quality or entertaining, it will get passed along with or without any other incentives. 3. Failing to provide incentives to encourage people to pass your message along While there are many successes where the sender was not rewarded for passing on viral information, it works better if you can provide an incentive. Provide an incentive that you dont have to pay up front. Instead provide a success incentive. If the desired outcome is met then you give them money, commissions, discounts, extended memberships, additional MP3 recordings, more articles, more eBooks, etc. Whatever incentive you decide to use, make sure it is easy to sign up for and easy to collect. 4. Failing to provide an incentive for people to respond to your call to action The way to sell with a viral marketing piece is to do so at the very end, in the conclusion, in the summary or in the resource box. It doesnt need to be a hard pitch, just an offer for an ethical bribe that will move them to visit your website, call your 800 number or send an email to get whatever you are offering. Experience has shown that the incentive should be related to your product or service. If you are a law firm, dont offer a chance to win a Corvette or an iPod. Too many unqualified people will sign up and waste your time following up with them. Instead if you are a law firm specializing in Intellectual Property, offer a free e-book on How you can increase the value of your company with patents and trademarks. 5. Failing to effectively promote their viral campaigns Because weve heard of some success stories where no promotion was needed, it is easy to fall into the trap that yours too will be one of those. Im not sure what the statistics are but the vast majority of viral marketing requires promotion to make them successful. 6. Failing to encourage others to pass it along There is a wonderful piece of wisdom you should apply to viral marketing you have not because you ask not. Does your viral marketing ask the reader to pass this along to others? This can be done in the resource box with something very simple like, If you found this useful, please pass it onto others that might be helped by it too. If it is a viral article and you have also it published on your website, have a button or link on the page that says Send to your friends. While it is true the Send to your friends button wont make it viral all by itself you never know which friend that gets it might decide to promote it to their list of 100,000. 7. Failing to send out anything less than a blockbuster success While it would be nice to repeat viral marketing successes like Blair Witch, Hotmail, Purple Cow or ICQ those are rare occurrences. Just because your idea falls a bit short of phenomenal doesnt mean it isnt worth doing. Lets say you shoot for exponential viral results and only obtain a moderate success, it is still a success. The fact you got free visitors to come to your site is great. I love Michael Jordans quote when he attempted to go into baseball after his wildly successful basketball career. I can accept failure, but I cant accept not trying. Even if you think it wont blow away Blair Witchs success, try it anyway. 8. Focusing on a single viral piece rather than a viral process One thing Ive noticed in my business career is that we tend to adopt the John Wayne syndrome, go big or go home. We give it ONE try and if it fails we go home. I dont know of successful business people or successful marketing campaigns that take that approach. Instead of giving it this one shot and then not doing anything after that, create a process for creating, promoting, testing and measuring continual viral marketing efforts. 9. Failing to test and track the results To be successful you need to experiment with different titles for the article or e-book; test different ethical bribes; try different promotional methods; approach different list owners. Find all of the elements that can be tested in your project, test various combinations and measure the results. 10. Not recognizing it is different from word-of-mouth marketing I fell in love with word-of-mouth marketing early in my consulting career. After 10 years of consulting I analyzed every project Id worked on, every client Id worked for and wrote down the source. To my shock, 95% of all of them came from word-of-mouth. The good news was it was cheap (free). The bad news it was unpredictable and couldnt be controlled on-demand like I needed. Viral marketing is like word-of-mouth in that one person passes it on to another but typical word-of-mouth comes from one person asking the other if they know how to solve a problem. It is much more reactive than proactive. Viral marketing is proactive. A person who reads a viral article or e-book immediately thinks of 5, 10, 500 or even 1,000 people that should know about this and they send it via email or put it up on their website or post in on their blog. Viral isnt one person coughing in another persons face, it is one person coughing in a crowded room causing it to spread like wildfire. Dan Swanson is a consultant and entrepreneur. Improve Your Mind With Some Simple Math Games

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Murdo Macleod Mathematics has long been recognized for it’s mental benefits. Working with numbers improves your concentration, memory, focus, problem solving skills, and general clarity of thought. To enjoy these benefits, you don’t have to indulge in any complicated formulas. All you need is a few minutes daily practice playing some simple math games. And before you rush out to buy the latest Xbox console and software, realize that numbers are all around you… Look at the clock on your computer. Usually it’s located in the lower right-hand corner of your screen (or use any clock to tell the time). The 24-hour format works best. On my computer right now, the time is 15:38. There are all kinds of creative games you can play with this.
